burwellComposer Carter Burwell continues his working relationship with director John Lee Hancock, whose previous features The Alamo and The Rookie both featured scores by the New York-based composer who is best known for his numerous scores for the films of the Coen brothers, and for last year’s score to the massive hit Twilight. Hancock’s and Burwell’s new film is entitled The Blind Side and, just like The Rookie, it’s an underdog sports movie. This one is based on the novel by Michael Lewis, ‘The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game’ and tells the story of a teenager who is recruited by a college football program . The cast features Sandra Bullock, Kathy Bates, Kim Dickens, Ray McKinnon and Quinton Aaron and Warner Bros. will release the film on November 20. Julia Michels is the music supervisor on the project. Carter Burwell has recently finished work on two other scores: Where the Wild Things Are (Spike Jonze’s new film that also features music by Karen O.) and A Serious Man (by the Coen bros).

I read parts of this book (the ones about Oher, not all the technical football stuff) and absolutely loved it. I really hope that this movie stays true to the original story, because this is one true story that needs no Hollywood embellishments to bring tears to even the most uptight person. Nobody could have written a fantasy story this life-affirming.

I’ve been waiting for this movie for awhile, but only just now saw the trailer and that is getting me even more excited. I also thought it was cool that they used a snippet of the song “Kill the Messenger” by Jack’s Mannequin in the 2nd trailer (about 45 seconds in), because the singer also has an inspirational personal story as a cancer survivor…hope to hear more Jack’s Mannequin music in the movie. Based on the inclusion of Jack’s in the trailer, I am assuming they have a pretty shrewd music supervisor, so I have high expectations for Carter Burwell’s score (even though I haven’t heard of him prior)
