Film themes get brass quintet treatment

1 September 2009 1,192 views One Comment

moviebrassNaxos has released a new digital album, also to be available on CD in February next year, called Moviebrass. It features the Italian Gomalan Brass Quintet performing various film themes arranged for brass quintet. Most of the rather playful arrangements (the Superman theme incorporates snippets of Richard Strauss’ ‘Also Sprach Zarathustra’ fanfare from 20o1: A Space Odyssey) are done by Marco Pierobon, who is also the leader of the quintet. Among the works featured are (of course) John Williams’ themes from Indiana Jones and Close Encounters of the Third Kind, music from Star Trek (on the streaming Naxos online release Alexander Courage’s theme is incorrectly credited to Jerry Goldsmith), Danny Elfman’s Simpsons theme, David Arnold’s Independence Day and James Horner’s Apollo 13 (also incorrectly credited to Goldsmith). The biggest portion is devoted to a suite from Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story, but perhaps the most unusual piece is the brass arrangement of Barber’s ‘Adagio for Strings’.
