Giacchino leads IFMCA nomination race
Composer Michael Giacchino set a new record in the six year long history of the International Film Music Critics Association Awards with nine (9) nominations for his output in 2009. Along with several mentions for his score to the animated Up (which also earned the composer the Golden Globe) and Star Trek, the 42-year old composer received nominations for television series Lost as well as documentary Earth Days.
Giacchino was also nominated for the “Composer of the Year” award, along with Alexandre Desplat (New Moon, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Julie & Julia, The Army of Crime, A Prophet, Coco Before Chanel, Cheri), James Horner (Avatar), Brian Tyler (Law Abiding Citizen, Middle Men, Fast & Furious, Dargonball: Evolution, The Killing Room) and Christopher Young (Love Happens, Creation, Drag Me to Hell, The Uninvited).
Both Giacchino’s Up and Star Trek are nominated for the “Score of the Year” award, along with James Horner’s Avatar, Christopher Young’s horror score Drag Me to Hell and Alexandre Desplat’s New Moon.
In the category of “Breakout Composer,” the IFMCA took notice of scores by up-and-coming composers Henry Jackman (Monsters vs Aliens), Abel Korzeniowski (A Single Man, Battle for Terra), James Peterson (The Red Canvas), Clinton Shorter (District 9) and Austin Wintory (Captain Abu Raed, Grace, Make the Yuletide Gay).
The International Film Music Critics Association, which consist of over 50 online, print and radio journalists who specialize in writing about film music. will announce the winners of its Sixth Annual Awards on February 26, 2010.
